Incremental Successes

Often times there is a moment (seconds/years) when things feel and look repetitive. When building piece by piece (smoothing/refining) on what we have learned becomes arduous. In order to develop ‘new’ tasks ‘old’ ones must be mastered. Boring? NO. It is the teacher who runs from repetition that must be avoided. If you cannot perform a certain skill/movement (effortlessly) the only way to true mastery is to dissect each component. Slowly and painfully strengthening the balance (body-awareness/capacity). Unfortunately many fall victim to the wondering eye. Do not do this. All you need is what you have been given. Realization and honesty of where you are in relation to your target or the targets set for you is what makes it all function. Goals? Or the priorities they reveal? Incremental successes is all there is. So when given praise, do not take it lightly.

We stretch further. Squeeze harder. Sense with hyper-awareness. & Breathe with less internal-tension. We are after things most people never knew existed their entire lives.

Again, many have no clue, nearly all lack the patience, and few control the ego long enough to try something new which does not seem, but IS impossible (this moment).

“I exist only in truth. This way I am impermeable from head to toe.”

Yoga?

Wondering my take on yoga?

Half of ‘you’ don’t have clue and the other half are busy with crystaIization. I sit happily in the middle occasionally watching in confusion.

Man explains, I have a knot in my back. Yes my friend I saw that when you left the car, your spine, your anatomical posture is crap. Those moveable bones called vertebrae, yeah they got you sliding down the pain train either way.

Undeveloped = Tight and Restrictive.
Flip the switch = See-through showed symptons.

My favorite example of connective tissue vs muscle is the movement pattern doris/plantar flexion/extension. With one you can tone (muscles) and one you can stretch (c.t.). The trick is to develop each separately (independently) and in parelel, together in synchrony (antagonist. protagonist). And succinctly, the moment (gap) i.e. moment of weightlessness and in-stability.

Another good expansion is, when rolling the shoulders, i.e. scapuler manipulation. With the wrong balance of connective tissues pliabIllity and muscle tension (toned & honed) you will hear the clicking and see the wincing.

The deeper the (concentric) contraction, meaning the shorter you can make the muscle, the further you will stretch the connective tissue (in control). This is the magic. *Strength thru range of motion. Not the sissy 30 second holds being done at the bar & yoga classes. My friend Gregory one of mn’s most mastered ballet instructors would go crazy.

Questions? Elaberations? It is a tricky one. Can you fInd your weakest links before it is to late?

‘The Happy Medium’

On one hand, we can program for capacity. On another, body composition. On another movement patterns. On another prehab/rehab. On another health, longevity, vitality, stress management. And there is more on this list.

Here is where the problem begins. If your knowledge and understanding is only in one realm you will be sure to miss the weak links. Focusing on one goal, i.e. learning to teach one ‘protocol’ is the enemy. Before we continue, a weekend seminar or semester class is not even the beginnings of prepping to teach others.

You think you can just throw some random workout on the board for all members? Think you can trust a client to execute broad instructions, then reconvene weekly? Dream on. Each rep, each breath, each set, each week must be supervised. You are taking people by the hand and walking together with them through each phase.

You must know your own method.

Example: I can look at someone from across the gym and within moments known precisely how to mold them. (In order to have this ability a high level of anatomy must be developed.)
The metamorphosis is two fold. 1. Movement patterns must be skillfully developed. 2. Muscles and c.t. must be developed (prefect posture/symmetry). Here’s the thing tho. It can take a person a year of stretching and strength training before this posture is formed. But if the person trains movements patterns seriously before this moment, less efficient movement patterns will be developed. Making it that much harder to find perfect alignment.

At any starting point we need to go through (balance) each movement and the related muscles and connective tissue. (Squat, Clean, Handstand, Pullup, Dip, Jumping, etc.) If one individual muscle is out of balance any compound movement should be placed second on the priority list. Obviously continue the compound movement, but put most effort into balancing perfect posture. This is the underdeveloped rear-deltoids, latissimus dorsi, gastrocnemius, adductors, hip-flexors, fingers/wrist/forearms, neck-muscles, erectors, psoas, abdominasl, etc.

Every person has a different need. So again each rep is unique to the individual. The tempo of each rep, the time under tension, the frequency, etc. This level of attention to detail is what separates the pack. Group classes without separate levels? Seriously?

Timing is everything.

There is a time and place for each macro nutrient (Fat. Protein. Carbohydrate). If you have followed me for a time you will understand there is only one food (quality) choice to be made (paleo). So let’s get more complicated, shall we? Eating the same foods at the same time every day? Wrong again. Routine intelligently designed by human psychology does not exist. The physical body is not governed by mental choice. It is mental clarity and awareness of the bodies demands that matter most. You must learn and know how to give your body what it specifically demands at specific times.

Have you been fasting and training? A bunch of fat and meet are not the best options. A small, easier digested, nutrient dense source is far superior. Berries do the trick best. Have you been moving heavy loads for 3-4 days straight? Muscles deeply sore? A 1lb of steak glazed with butter will be your smartest option. Have you been taking it easy, doing some walking, running up some stairs? A generous hit of insoluble and soluble fibers (greens and starchy vegetables) would keep you running light and clean. You see, If you ‘cross train’ the same way every day, and eat the same ‘variety’ every day, you need to do more research. You need to train with shockingly specific intent. Recover with equal discipline. Repeat just long enough to elicit a response, then transition your adaption and skills to another facet of your ever changing physicality.
